When it comes to cuisine, South Africa has a rich, diverse collection of dishes. Have you ever tried explaining it to someone else? It isn't something that can be done in a single sentence!
So, YumZa was started because of my passion for cooking the crowds of friends and family. Whether it was just one of those "Ons gaan nou Braai" or a family get-together I always ended up with the tongs or taking care of the pots. As South Africans, food is in our culture and DNA. It's more than just food but also the socializing aspect of having a tasty meal with family and friends.
At YumZa Grill, we try our best to bring all our flavors of home to life in our meals to give you the joy of feeling just like you are at home in the motherland South Africa.
A few Traditional South African Fast Food Favourites. Food always tastes better when you know the story behind it. Every dish has a story to be heard!
Bunny Chow, often referred to simply as Bunny, is an Indian South African fast food dish consisting of a hollowed-out loaf of white bread filled with curry and normally accompanied by a serving of salad on the side. It originated among Indian South Africans of Durban. And is well-loved by most South Africans!
A Gatsby is a South African Submarine sandwich consisting of a bread roll filled with fried chips and a choice of fillings and sauces. It originated in Cape Town and is popular throughout the Western Cape Province. The sandwich is typically large and shared by several people.
Boerewors is a type of Sausage that originated in South Africa. It is an important part of South African, Zimbabwean, Zambian, Botswana, and Namibian cuisine and is popular across Southern Africa.
The name is derived from the Afrikaans words boer meaning farmer and wors meaning sausage.
Vetkoek ( Pronounced Fet cook ) is a traditional South African fried dough bread. The Vetkoek forms a part of South African culture & is similar to the Caribbean Johnny cake, the Dutch olieboi, and also known by the Xhosa and Zulu name igwinya ( plural amagwinya).
Slap Chips (Pronounced as slup chips) is a slang phrase for deep-fried potato chips sold at takeaway seafood shops, grocery stores, and restaurants. The word slap means 'limp' in Afrikaans and is a perfect description for potato chips which are larger than French fries.
Russian sausages, a firm South African favourite, best served with chips. Made from beef and pork with aromatic spices, herbs and a hint of smoke. And if you like them cheesy, we have that option for you too.
In South Africa, a potjiekos, literally translated "small-pot food", is a dish prepared outdoors. It is traditionally cooked in a round, cast iron, three-legged cauldron, the potjie, which descended from the Dutch oven brought from the Netherlands to South Africa in the 17th century and found in the homes and villages of people throughout southern Africa.
Well, quite simply explained, braai is a way to cook & roast meat using aromatic wood. Braai can also be used to refer to long social gatherings with a braai taking place in the background. Something like a traditional American barbeque without the gas/electric grill, instead, South Africans will have a wood fire pit or a braai stand!
Biltong and Droewors are a form of dried, cured meat that originated in Southern African countries (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini and Zambia).
